TRAVEL TIPS

Car Travel

Although car rentals are inexpensive (as little as $15 a day if booked in advance), we don't recommend that you rent a car if you're staying only in San Juan (at most you might want to rent a car for a day to explore more of the island). Parking is difficult—particularly in Old San Juan—and many hotels charge hefty daily rates; also, traffic can be very heavy. With relatively reasonable taxi rates, it simply doesn't pay to rent a car unless you are leaving the city.

The main highways into San Juan are Route 26 from the east (it becomes the Baldorioty de Castro Expressway after passing the airport), Route 22 (José de Diego Expressway) from the west, and Route 52 (Luis A. Ferré Expressway) from the south.
