TRAVEL TIPS

Planning Your Time

You could very easily spend five days in Havana and still not get to see everything it has to offer. If you have a week in the area, we suggest four of five days in the city, combined with a two or three-day beach break in the Playas del Este, about 11 miles (18 km) east of the city. The best way to explore the city is to begin your time in Habana Vieja (the historic old town) and the fortresses across the bay, then slowly work your way west through Centro Habana and Vedado, leaving half a day at the end to visit the farthest and most modern area of Miramar with its magnificent mansions. If you have a couple of extra days, head east to the other side of the Havana Port to visit the small towns of Regla and Guanabaco, famous for their connections to the Santería religion. You may also wish to explore farther south to visit Finca Vigía, the former home of Ernest Hemingway, as well as Parque Lenin.
